The place where I take my class is actually an outside studio that offers classes to SACI students. It's very laid back and under the "work at your own pace" mentality. It reminds me a lot of the after school art classes I used to take when I was young.
The assignment for our first project was to create a composition using four colors. We were given complete freedom with subject matter, execution, etc. As a design student with a love for all things poster related I immediately thought of all those really neat vintage travel posters. I was given strict "instruction" from the know-it-all resident artist that just takes up space in the studio during our class time, just how horrible it was when students did things designed around the Duomo or the Ponte Vecchio. I can't say I agree with his philosophy, but it got me thinking about other things. Feeling inspired from my recent trip to Chianti, I used an image of grapes on a vine that I had taken and manipulated it to give it a vintage poster feel.
Once the sketching, photocopying of sketching, and filling in of many many lines was done we moved on to the fun part. I've become proficient at using a powerwasher after cleaning my screens for use. There are several other steps too, including coating the screen and burning the image onto the screen. After that was all set I had to mix paints and was ready to print.
Basically the image that we have created gets burned onto the screen in layers. We then paint the image onto paper layer by layer and TA-DA we get our final product:
Limited edition prints will be available to the highest bidder :).
The whole process was a lot of fun and I am really excited to refine my skills and come up with better looking prints that stay in the lines a little more! I am really loving this hands-on approach to design!
I really like the "outside the lines" look. Looks vintage to me. Oh and count me in as a high bidder cuz I want a print. You are good at what you do Maybe you could start on "national park" posters for dad....:)
